Controversially, the Chartered Institute of Housing has called for a tourist tax as part of the proposed regulation of Airbnb-style short-term lets of residential premises.
Whilst the UK hospitality industry has been calling for some time for stricter controls (and enforcement of the existing rules) on the "home sharing economy", a tourism tax would have a wider impact on the regulated sector and is unlikely to be welcomed by the hospitality industry as a whole.
Airbnb has recently taken steps to move closer to a management model recently by taking a stake in Indian operator OYO.
